This. It’s not pop culture, exactly, but I need to air out some feelings on it. It is taking a lot for me to cohere some legitimate thoughts on this matter, instead of just writing “Pope Benedict is the worst ever” and leaving it at that, but maybe list form will help us all out.
1. Can someone please let the Vatican know that sperm is not actually a baby? It’s about damn time. I mean, their confusion on this has been really amusing for the past few centuries, but I’m kind of over the “every sperm is sacred” bullshit.
2. This just seems like such a strange, strange distinction to make. I mean, I completely agree that male sex workers should be using condoms. But why just them? Why not female sex workers? Are they just supposed to be saddled with any STDs and unwanted pregnancies that come their way because lady parts are the scourge of the earth? And, in a broader sense, why not anyone who might be exposed to a sexually transmitted disease, by which I mean everyone who’s sexually active? Why is taking responsibility for one’s sexual health only responsible and moral when that one very specific subset of the population does it?
3. I just realized that these pro-condom statements are probably operating under the assumption that male sex workers only have male clients, and therefore the condoms aren’t preventing a pregnancy. Which leads me to two overarching points:
—Pope Benedict is the worst.
(Sorry. I had to get that out of my system.)
—I’m really tired of old, white dudes who don’t have any sex trying to decide things about everyone else’s sex lives. Do they really think anyone is listening to them about this shit anymore, least of all a group of people they consistently demonize?
